ARE EARTHQUAKES INCREASING?
This graph with the numbers of 4.0 to 9.9 quakes by year from 1970 to 2005 clearly demonstrates that quakes are on the increase.

Earthquakes From 526 A.D. to 2001

Between the years 526 A.D. and 1896 there were only 31 known major earthquakes worldwide. Approximately 2,693,000 people died in that 1,370 year period from those 31 earthquakes. However, during the 20th century alone there have been over 56 major quakes in which well over 2,000,000 people have died. One might say that the detection and reporting of earthquakes has improved recently over those centuries of the past. Granted, this may be true, so let us look at the quakes from 1890 to 2009 that measured over 6 on the Richter scale to see if these have increased.

From 1890 to 1899 there was 1 quake.
From 1900 to 1909 there were 3.
From 1910 to 1919 there were 2.
From 1920 to 1929 there were 2.
From 1930 to 1939 there were 5.
From 1940 to 1949 there were 51.
From 1950 to 1959 there were 475.
From 1960 to 1969 there were 1,056.
From 1970 to 1979 there were 1,184. [1]
From 1980 to 1989 there were 1,085. [2]
From 1990 to 1999 there were 1,492. [3]
From 2000 to 2009 there were 1,611. [4]

The record shows an increase in seismic activity, and when quakes of over 5 on the Richter scale are added, it is even clearer. When 5.0 - 5.9 Richter quakes are factored in to the 90's and 00's above, the increase becomes even more dramatic:

From 1990 to 1999 there were 1,4801 [3]
From 2000 to 2009 there were 1,7209 [4]

And there is even more graphic proof for recent years:

Magnitude     2001 to 2005      2006 to 2010
8.0 to 9.9              5                        8
7.0 to 7.9             66                      72
6.0 to 6.9            669                     783
5.0 to 5.9           6836                   9374
4.0 to 4.9          49799                 54268
                       57375                64505 [4]

Finally, for 2010 and 2011 the number of Quakes are as follows:

Magnitude           2010                     2011
8.0 to 9.9              1                           1
7.0 to 7.9             22                         18
6.0 to 6.9            150                       170
5.0 to 5.9           1983                     2058
4.0 to 4.9          10383                   11457
                       12529                  13704 [4]
